Graafschap Church: Life, Love and LegacyGraafschap Church: Life, Love and Legacy

Graafschap Church is a Christian community or congregation on the south side of Holland, Michigan, where she has been since Europeans settled this area in 1847. She welcomes people of all ages to join in the praise of the Lord Jesus Christ. Her building looks very traditional, from the rooster on her steeple to her tall, heavenward, architectural lines and her traditional white color. This speaks of her respect for lasting Christian principles and practice. She has seen many seasons of God's blessings but continues to be alive and vibrant in modern times. About 500 people call Graafschap their home church. They value relevant, biblical preaching and teaching along with music that includes both old and newer styles.  The congregation would love to have you join your heart and voice with theirs as we gather before the throne of God.

Graafschap Church is part of the Christian Reformed denomination. In fact, Graafschap is one of the founding congregations of the denomination that now consists of about a thosand congregations in the United States and Canada. As the name of the denomination implies, these Christians appreciate the values of the historic Protestant Reformation that took place during the sixteenth century, especially as described by John Calvin. They have many doctrinal similarities with the Presbyterians and other Reformed denominations, like the Reformed Church in America. One summary of this sort of Reformed emphasis in Christianity has been well expressed in this way; all a person needs is Christ alone, received through faith alone, based upon the Bible alone.

Graafschap is a strange sounding name. It sounds strange because it is not an English word at all. It is a German word and it means, “the count’s estate.” Just as New York took its name from York in England, so also the small group of religious Germans, who lived on the border of the Netherlands, took the name of their hometown with them to America. After they felled some trees and built their log cabin church, they christened the church and surrounding community “Graafschap.” It’s only strange at first, like any new thing.
