THE CHURCH The great leaders were Rev. A. C. Van Raalte, Rev. D. J. Vander Werp, and Senator J. W. Garvelink. In 1857 a new denomination was born, nine daughter churches and a sister church began through Graafschap Church.

We came to America because of an intense desire for more space, more freedom, and a better future, God willing.
The voyage began in Rotterdam on September 24, 1846, on the Southerner. A storm at sea made most of the
passengers seasick. Three people died during the 7-week voyage. When at last we arrived in Detroit, we went in
search of a suitable place to settle.
It was difficult to decide on the right place. The area between the Grand and Kalamazoo Rivers was chosen for its rich
forest soil and ideal climate for fruit farming. Its proximity to Lake Michigan and an ideal harbor would be good for
transportation. It was also sufficiently isolated to insure that we would stay together to maintain our unity of Godly
purpose and principles. I envisioned plentiful work and opportunities in farming, fishing, and the building trades.
But the early years were hard. The forests were thick and the swamps treacherous. Nearby Indians regarded the
Hollanders as a strange breed, quite inferior to American whites. Worship services were held outdoors, under the
trees, with stumps as seats.
In Graafschap, many became deadly ill early on. I gave what medicine I had and was called on at all hours to visit the
sick and dying. Many children were orphaned. But eventually, many of the sick recovered, thanks be to God.
I wanted dearly for the people to aim at a lofty standard of life; to cultivate knowledge, that they might be a great
people in this land. I am grateful to God that I lived long enough to see people living well, to see fisheries, mills,
factories, flourishing farms and towns, and a vital church life. That’s why I said at the 25th anniversary of our colony:
“Beloved, who follow us in this inheritance, we give it over to you with joy. But do not forget, we received it from God as
a training school for eternity—a work place in God’s kingdom.”
Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte shares their vision and tell us of their early trials.
